Event Description: The Washington County Museum is one of the featured venues for the Washington County Cooperative Library Services 10th Annual Storytelling Festival, Art of the Story April 5-12. The festival features five professional storytellers telling tales and offering workshops at the WCCLS member libraries, the Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center and at the Washington County Museum. The Museum is featuring two days of programming. The first is Sunday April 6 from 1:00-4:00 PM, at the museum's downtown Hillsboro Civic Center plaza location at 120 E Main. The afternoon features museum staff with an overview of the art of Oral Histories and how to curate your own family stories followed by guest story teller, Will Hornyak presenting both stories and a workshop for aspiring storytellers. At 1:00 PM, Education Curator and Folklorist Beth Dehn will give a talk on the museum's oral history collection and how to conduct an oral history interview to capture your family stories. Museum staff will also share information on what type of items the museum collects and how to curate and display family artifacts and heirlooms in the home. At 2:15 featured storyteller, Will Hornyak will perform with "Irish Myths and Legends". His storytelling performance will be followed by his workshop "The Art and Craft of the Tale". Hornyak is a professional storyteller performing throughout the United States. He was named Artist of the Year by Young Audiences of Oregon and was awarded the Brimstone Grant by the National Storytelling Network for his assembly program Living Streams: Stories of Healthy Watersheds. He also teaches storytelling in professional communication at Marylhurst University. On Wednesday, April 9, the museum features an open house at the Portland Community College Rock Creek location, 17677 NW Springville Road from Noon-4:00 PM. The Rock Creek location houses the Museum's collections including the county archives and is open by appointment to researchers. Curator Karen Lange will give an overview on Curatorial Resources available and how to best begin gathering the research needed to tell family histories. There will also be informal tours of the library and archives. Both events are free and open to the public recommended for ages 10 and over. Advance reservations are encouraged. You may reserve space by phoning the museum 503-645-5353 ext 114 or through the museum website: washingtoncountymuseum.org/exhibits&events.
