Event Description: The rich diversity of Indian classical dance forms will be on view at Mai3m’s annual dance festival, Mithranjali, to be held on Saturdays in July and August at the Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center, Hillsboro. The festival is being held thanks to the Washington County Community Cultural Participation Grant received from the Cultural Coalition of Washington County. In its debut year, the dance festival will showcase through its lineup of solo performances, the richness of the styles and traditions of classical dance forms from India. “The festival will provide opportunities to the dancers to demonstrate the entire breadth of their individual skills as well as the technical aspect of the dance style from footwork to facial expressions, and their individual stamina,” said Festival Director, Meera Kanagal. “We plan to make this festival an annual event and hope that in future we will have dancers from all over the country participating in this event,” added Mai3m President and co-founder Anita Menon. Giving more details about the festival, Ms. Kanagal said that the festival will kick-off on July 26 with a lecture-cum-demonstration for those unfamiliar with Indian classical dance forms. The lecture will also explore the aesthetics, sensibilities, issues and perspectives of Indian classical dance as well as exciting new dimensions in Indian-American contexts. This will be followed by three performances. Also on the agenda are four performances each on August 2nd, 23rd and the 30th. Dancer participation in the festival is by invitation only.
